Efficacy of Bronchial Wash Cytology and its Correlation with Histopathology in Diagnosis of Lung Carcinoma in a Tertiary Care Hospital

Introduction: Cytological evaluation is an important, usually initial diagnostic modality in patients with suspected malignant lung masses. Bronchoscopic washing, bronchoalveolar lavage, bronchial brushing and fine needle aspirations may complement tissue biopsies the diagnosis of cancer. This study was undertaken to compare efficacy wash cytology correlate it histopathology cases cancer at a tertiary care hospital.
 Material methods: Bronchial washings biopsy were collected from total 60 clinically carcinoma lung. washing smears stained MGG H&E stain categorized as unequivocally positive / negative for malignancy atypical (equivocal diagnosis). Biopsy sections examined histopathological diagnosis.
 Results: Cytomorphologically, 30 reported malignancy, 28 02 atypical. On histopathology, diagnosed 48 out them 35 squamous cell carcinoma, 7 small 6 large carcinoma.
 Conclusion: Maximum yield can be obtained by combining cytological procedures rather alone.
